The archive ranges from society in Britain to British engineering, transport and military activity in the colonial Middle East. Trains, railways, planes and early biplanes, automobiles, boats, people and places, Middle Eastern architecture and Arabic society from the early twentieth century are all included in the trail of these photographic footprints through the social history of the period.
All images originate from the activities of a small number of skilled photographers with a singular eye for iconic detail. The collection draws upon both the story and intimate society of the photographers, and through this portal the wider story of the society and culture in which they moved both east and west.
